First and foremost, we really like to play rock and roll music. Flatfoot formed in East Lansing during the fall of 2000. The Bales brothers brought Thom over to play bass for a few songs at their first East Lansing show. Obviously, he clicked. Well, really we didn't hear him play, but were mesmerized by the Rick Danko hair and Guns 'N Roses belt buckle. J.P. Nichols had played with Aaron before, and was a logical choice to add to a "few songs" as well. Everyone liked him so much, we were forced to bring JP into the fold. Following a year of exclusively acoustic shows, Tom's roomate Joe played with us at our first electric gig. Although he despises that whole "playing with others" aspect of the band, we convinced him to stick around for two years. Eventually, both Joe and JP had to move on down the line, run down that dream. Reduced to 3 and demoralized, our savior appeared from the frozen north. Erik Miller came with his old Forestry Service van full of drums to rescue us. Then, Tom left in 2004 to reunite with Joe in New York City. Longtime friend Jeremy Whitwam now plays the bass and does it quite well, thankya very much. We've been lucky enough to play all around the state, with some great national like Marah, Robbie Fulks and Anders Parker along with all of our local friends. We love playing rock and roll. The name Flatfoot comes from Camp Neyati, a summer camp central to the Bales brothers childhood. Flatfoot is (briefly) the story of a Detroit banker at the turn of the century. When the normally self absorbed banker saves a child from a streetcar, his feet become severely damaged. They healed into flipper like shapes, and he retreated from society to the great Northern Woods. To write anymore of the story would be criminal - it should be heard. |
